Short U Words

Short u is the sound at the start of up and umbrella and in the middle of bug, sun and cup. It is the shortest and most relaxed of the five short vowels, and usually the last one taught.

Short u is the sound you hear at the start of up and umbrella, and in the middle of bug, sun and cup. It is the most relaxed of the five: the mouth barely opens and the sound is over almost before it starts.

Short u is usually the last of the five taught, and it has six word families, as many as short a and more than the other three. By the time a child gets here they have normally met the other four, which makes this page a review as much as a new sound.

What are the short u word families?

Short u has six families, the most of any vowel alongside short a: -ug, -un, -up, -ut, -ub and -um. Each has its own list and worksheets on the CVC words page, except the two smallest: -up and -um share a section there, because only a few words a young child knows end in either.

Six families means the sections below can take one word from each, so the ending changes on every line and your child cannot read the list by swapping the first letter.

How to practise short u words

Read them, then write them, then find them in a book. Say the sound before the word: /u/, then bug.

One vowel at a time, in a set order, is the point. That is what the National Reading Panel calls systematic phonics, and the panel found it “significantly more effective than instruction that teaches little or no phonics” across kindergarten through 6th grade.

Short u is the one to say quietly. It is the shortest of the five sounds, and a parent who stretches it turns it into something else. Say bug at normal speed rather than b-uuuu-g.

Short u and short o are the pair to watch here. Hot and hut, cop and cup, not and nut. It is a quieter confusion than short e and short i, but it is the same kind: two sounds made close together. If it turns up, read the pairs across rather than practising each vowel alone.

Short u and long u

Long u says the letter’s own name: cub becomes cube, tub becomes tube, cut becomes cute. The silent e on the end is what does it.

Silent-e words pairs each short word with its long twin, and its long-u section uses exactly these words.

Knowing both sounds for the same letter is a kindergarten expectation: Common Core (RF.K.3b) asks children to “associate the long and short sounds with the common spellings (graphemes) for the five major vowels”.

Which words start with short u?

Short u at the start of a word is easiest to hear on umbrella, which is the word most phonics charts use for it. Say it slowly and the very first sound is the one this page is about.

There are only a handful. Up, us, under and umbrella is most of what a young child would recognise, and up and us are words they will read on sight long before they sound them out.

Almost every short u word your child meets puts the u in the middle, which is the two sections below.

What are the first short u words to read?

Six words and six different endings, one from every short u family there is. Bug, sun, cup, nut, tub, gum.

Short u and short a are the two vowels where that is possible. Short e and short o have four families each and short i has five; short a and short u have six, so this list is a clean sweep rather than a selection. Each line changes the ending, which means your child has to read to the end of every word.

Say them quietly. Short u is the shortest of the five sounds and the easiest one for a grown-up to overdo. B-uuuu-g is not the word; bug is. Say it at the speed you would say it in a sentence.

What are some more short u words?

Rug and run start the same and end differently, which makes them the pair worth doing slowly. A child who reads the first two letters and guesses will say one for the other, and that is a reading-to-the-end habit rather than a short u problem.

By this section most children are reviewing rather than learning. Short u is usually the fifth vowel taught, so if the other four are solid these six should come quickly. If they do not, the sound is worth checking on its own before more words go on the page.
