How Kids Learn to Spell

What age spelling starts, the five stages it arrives in, and why nite for night is a good sign.

Frequently asked questions

What age should a child start learning to spell?

Usually around five, but the two things that decide it are knowing most letter sounds and being able to hear the separate sounds in a spoken word. Those are the starting gun rather than a birthday. Before that, writing a letter for a sound they hear is the real milestone, even when the result is not a word.

What is normal spelling progress for children aged 5 to 8?

Roughly: at five, some sounds captured and the middles missing. At six, a letter for every sound, so spellings are readable but wrong. At seven, real English patterns appearing in the wrong places. By eight, most common words correct and the errors concentrated in patterns not yet taught.

How can I tell if my child is developing spelling skills normally?

Look at whether the errors are changing shape rather than whether they are disappearing. A child moving from nt to nite for night has gained a whole vowel sound, which is progress even though both are wrong. Errors that stay identical for months are the thing worth asking about.

When do children typically start spelling phonetically?

Most commonly around six, when a child starts writing a letter or letter team for every sound they can hear. It is the biggest single jump in spelling development, because from that point a stranger can usually read what your child wrote.

What's the impact of reading on spelling development in children?

Reading builds the store of spellings a child can draw on, so heavy readers usually spell better. It is not sufficient on its own, which is why children who read constantly can still spell badly: reading lets you recognise a word, and spelling asks you to produce it with nothing on the page to work from.

How does spelling development vary among children?

A lot. Spelling depends on letter-sound knowledge, hearing sounds in words, handwriting fluency and how much a child writes, and children pick those up at different rates. A child can be well ahead on one of those and behind on another.

What is considered normal spelling ability for a 6-year-old?

Writing a letter for most of the sounds they hear, so words are readable but often not correct. KAT for cat and NIT for night are both exactly what a six year old is expected to produce. Correct spelling of common words usually arrives later, and unevenly.
