How to Teach Spelling at Home

Spelling is reading run backwards, so teach it the same way: one sound at a time. Say the word, count the sounds you can hear, write a letter or letter team for each one, then read it back and check it together. That is the whole method, and it works on words your child has never met.

Five to ten minutes a day is enough. Three short sessions beat one long one, and the practice that counts is writing a word from memory rather than copying it, because a copied word is visible the whole time your child is writing it.

The reason to teach sounds rather than whole words is that a pattern transfers and a memorized word does not. A child who learns night by heart has learned one word. A child who maps n, igh and t has also learned light, right and bright.

Why your child can read a word but can’t spell it

Reading a word and spelling it are two different jobs, and spelling is the harder one. Reading is recognition: the word is in front of your child and they have to work out what it says. Spelling is production, with nothing on the page to work from. Every child reads more words than they can spell, and the gap between the two is normal rather than a sign that something has gone wrong.

What closes the gap is the same knowledge in both directions. Reading researcher Linnea Ehri calls it orthographic mapping: the process of bonding a word’s spelling to its pronunciation in memory. Her 2014 paper in Scientific Studies of Reading (volume 18, issue 1) describes it as what “explains how children learn to read words by sight, to spell words from memory, and to acquire vocabulary words from print.” One process, three results.

The practical consequence is that spelling practice is not a separate subject bolted onto reading. It is the same letter-sound knowledge, used in the direction that is harder, which is why it is also the direction that shows you what your child has genuinely learned.

How to actually teach a word

Teach the word by its sounds, in order, one spelling per sound. The steps below take about two minutes for a single word.

   Say the word

   Say it normally, at ordinary speed, and have your child say it back. If they cannot say it clearly they cannot spell it yet, and the word to practice is an easier one.

   Count the sounds

   Stretch the word out and count its sounds on your fingers. Ship is three sounds, not four letters. Night is three sounds, not five. The count is of sounds you can hear, never of letters.

   Write one spelling per sound

   Have your child write a letter or letter team for each sound, in order, saying each sound as they write it. The sh in ship is one spelling for one sound, and it goes in one box.

   Read it back

   Have your child read what they wrote, sounding it out. This is the step that catches a missing sound, and it is the one most often skipped.

   Check it together

   Compare it with the correct spelling and name what is different, out loud. Not 'that's wrong' but 'you heard every sound, and this one is spelled with a k'. The child who knows which part was wrong has learned something; the child who only knows the word was wrong has not.

The step that does the work is counting sounds rather than letters, and it is the one that feels wrong at first. Count the sounds in these five words and the mismatch is obvious:

Three of those five have more letters than sounds, cat matches, and box runs the other way. If your child writes a letter or letter team for every sound they hear and no more, they will be close on almost every word, and the places they are wrong are the places worth teaching.

Which means: pick a word where the sounds and letters do not match one to one. Cat teaches nothing, because the whole difficulty of English spelling is the mismatch.

Is it better to use phonics or whole language for spelling?

Phonics, and this is one of the better-settled questions in reading research. Teaching the relationship between sounds and letters explicitly, in a planned order, produces better spelling than expecting a child to absorb the patterns from reading alone.

The National Reading Panel reported in 2000 that systematic phonics instruction improved spelling as well as reading, and that the effect was strongest in the early grades. That is the finding this page’s method rests on, and it is worth knowing that it is about systematic instruction: a planned sequence, not phonics mentioned occasionally.

None of that means whole words never get memorized. A small number of very common words break the patterns and have to be learned partly by heart. Those are sight words, and how to teach them is its own question with a different answer. The mistake is treating every word that way.

How much spelling practice is enough?

Five to ten minutes a day, and three short sessions in a week beat one long one. Spelling is held by retrieving a word repeatedly over time, so the same twenty minutes split into four five-minute sessions does more than twenty minutes in one sitting on Sunday.

A session that size holds about five words, not fifteen. If the list has fifteen, split it across the week rather than running the whole thing every night.

Dictation is the highest-value version of those minutes. Say a word, or a short sentence containing it, and have your child write it without seeing it. Then check it together immediately. On days dictation meets resistance, no-prep spelling games do the same retrieval without feeling like a test.

Copying a word five times practices handwriting, not spelling. The correct answer is visible the entire time, so nothing is being retrieved from memory, which is the thing spelling actually is. This is the single change most likely to make your existing ten minutes work better.

Do we need a spelling curriculum, or can we freestyle it?

A sequence matters. A purchased product does not. The thing a good spelling program gives you is an order: patterns taught one at a time, each building on the last, with enough words in each to make the pattern obvious.

You can get that from the list your school already sends home, by sorting it before you study it. Most weekly lists mix two or three patterns with a couple of words that simply have to be remembered. Group them, and fifteen unrelated items become three small rules and two exceptions.

Common mistakes when teaching spelling at home

Most of these are things a parent does because they look like teaching. The table names the mistake, what it costs, and what to do instead.

The mismatch worth naming separately is between these mistakes and your child’s own spelling errors. A misspelling is information about what your child heard and what they know; it is not the same thing as a parent practicing badly. What to do when your child gets one wrong

Say what was different, not that it was wrong. A child who is told “you heard every sound, and this one is spelled with a k” has learned something they can use. A child who is told the word is wrong has learned only that the word is wrong.

A spelling that is wrong but sounds right is progress, not failure. Nite for night means your child heard all three sounds and chose a reasonable spelling for each. The only thing missing is which spelling English uses for that word, which is much less work than it looks. That is why correcting everything in your child’s own writing backfires. When your child is writing a story, the story is the job. Spelling their own way, and getting it wrong, is how they practice the mapping, and how much of that is worth correcting depends on whether the word uses a pattern you have taught yet.

Spelling word lists and worksheets by grade

• Kindergarten spelling words: a group for each skill: two-letter words such as at and up, CVC words such as cat and sun, sight words like the and is, and the first letter pairs, sh, ch and th. Its sheets include Trace and Write and Sound Boxes, for a child not yet writing from memory.
• 1st grade spelling words: five groups, one for each first-grade pattern: -ck (duck), the FLOSS rule (bell), sh, ch, th and wh (ship), silent e (cake), and tricky words like said and was.
• 2nd grade spelling words: ten groups, from silent e, tch and dge to vowel teams (rain), vowels changed by an r (bird), the -ing endings (hopping) and silent letters (knee), plus common words like because.

The 1st and 2nd grade lists both carry a Spelling Practice sheet: each word printed once, then written twice from memory, which is the look-cover-write routine on paper. Whatever sheet you print, check whether the word stays visible. A sheet where the word is printed next to the space is handwriting practice. A sheet where the word is covered before your child writes it is spelling practice, because something has to be retrieved from memory.

Word searches are the exception worth naming, because they are the format parents search for most. A word search asks your child to recognize a word that is already on the page, which is reading. It is a fine way to spend ten minutes and it is not spelling practice, so do not count it as the day’s practice.

How to tell it is working

Look at your child’s own writing, not at test scores. A Friday score measures a week of rehearsal, and rehearsal fades. Three things are better signals:

• Words from a taught pattern turn up spelled correctly in writing you did not set. That is the pattern transferring, which is the whole goal.
• The errors change shape. A child moving from nt to nite for night has gained a whole vowel sound. That is progress even though both are wrong.
• Your child self-corrects. Noticing a word looks wrong and trying again means they now hold a spelling to compare against.

By second grade the standard most US schools work from asks for exactly this. Common Core L.2.2.d asks second graders to “generalize learned spelling patterns when writing words,” with the examples cage → badge and boy → boil. It asks for the pattern to transfer to a new word, not for a list to be remembered.
